In The Plant Shop

PhotoAbout Caradoc Doy.
My Background

After leaving school in 1984, I was already interested in plants and was also keen to learn about operating a business and work in a people-based environment. Quite naturally, I was drawn to working in my local garden centre and at the same time, took my first horticultural studies at Bicton College of Agriculture, now Bicton College. This paved the way for a career in horticulture.

I studied a diploma in horticulture (specialising in garden centre management), at Pershore College of Horticulture between 1987 and 1990. My middle year was spent at Bridgemere Garden World where I was exposed to a huge range of plants.

Over the best part of the next ten years I took up a number of interesting challenges around the country. This included a marketing role at Blakedown Nurseries, which exposed me to some of the exciting opportunities for introducing new plants into the British garden market as well as the disciplines and challenges that face the nursery industry.

In 1993, I joined Notcutts Nurseries, as a Management Trainee where I was to spend seven years in various garden centre supervisory and management roles. Also during this time I had a spell at Otter Nurseries in Devon as one of their plant advisors.

In 2001 I decided to return to my roots, in Devon and started work at my local and well-respected nursery, St. Bridget Nurseries in Exeter. I spent three years as assistant to the Managing Director before leaving to start my own business.

Having a passion for plants, a keen interest in landscape and gardens, plant conservation and professional horticulturist for many years, Caradoc Doy has become an experienced horticulturist and plant marketeer. He has undertaken a variety of projects from planning major plant marketing campaigns and plant marketing material to being involved in modernising garden centres and preparing plant-based exhibitions.
