Presents:

A Day that will Transport you into the WORLD OF THE EARLY PLANT-HUNTERS

Monday 10th May

Join us to hear not one, but two excellent talks about some of the most prestigious plant-hunters of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Caradoc Doy will be giving the first talk at 11am: Plant Hunters & Pioneers, which will be followed by a buffet lunch. At 2pm. you can then enjoy the second talk, The Chinese Gooseberry Man, which will be a presentation in costume by the actor Geoff Hales.

Plant Hunters & Pioneers tells the fascinating story of the Veitch Nurseries of Exeter and Chelsea and some of the many popular plants they introduced. The Exeter nurseries of James Veitch & Sons were responsible for many horticultural firsts, including being the first commercial nursery in Britain to sponsor their own plant collectors, who returned many hundreds of new exotic plants for British gardens.

Geoff Hales actor and author will entrance his listeners with tales of Wilson’s adventures on the great rivers and remote mountains of China, recounting some of the experiences in Wilson’s own words, In the costume of the period.

The Chinese Gooseberry Man tells the story of some of the trials and difficulties encountered by Ernest ‘Chinese’ Wilson, who made four expeditions to China in the first years of the twentieth century, bringing back such plants as the Chinese Gooseberry itself (or Kiwi Fruit, as we now know it), the Regal Lily and the Yellow and Red Poppyworts. He also brought back the seeds of the Handkerchief Tree.

Enjoy these two great talks and a buffet lunch within the beautiful surroundings of Popplefords restaurant tickets are £15 payable on the door, tickets in advance for only £12.50 each

For further details please contact Busy Lizzie’s on 01395 568558 or Visit Busy Lizzie’s craft & plant shop, Popplefords Barn, Exeter Road, Just outside Newton Poppleford.

Busy Lizzie’s from Newton Popplefords is celebrating its nomination to win Deli of the Year 2010 – and everyone is invited to visit the shop to taste why customers think Busy Lizzie’s is worth the first ever Deli of the Year award!

“The Deli of the Year Award is a new idea for 2010 and we are chuffed to bits to have been nominated and voted for by our customers. We love finding new foods and flavours to extend our range of locally produced foods we like to offer something very special every day of the year and are able to change with the seasons, and find the most amazing local jams that are just right with our fresh bread or home baked scones. We are always on the look out for new lines and are very excited to be introducing a range of superb olives and oils and out of the ordinary snacks. That’s what makes our shop very special,” said Liz Sharples.

To help celebrate our love of good food Popplefords Restaurant is offering a special Purple Love Menu. So a great time to visit Busy Lizzie’s & Popplefords Restaurant is during Purple Love Week which takes place this year from 13th – 21st February.

Purple Love Week is now in its fifth year and it celebrates the effort and dedication of shops, large and small, that offer great food. Since it first started, five years ago, Purple Love Week has involved tens of thousands of people in hundreds of shops up and down the UK.

Purple Love Week was founded by Dorset food company Olives Et Al. “We feel that even the smallest post office with a tiny deli type of counter should be celebrated and so this year we came up with the idea of Deli of the Year and decided to launch it during Purple Love Week,” explained Giles Henschel of Olives Et Al. “We are completely bowled over by the response and hope that delis of all shapes and sizes will be celebrating as the Deli of the Year competition builds up – votes are already coming in and it’s a good feeling to know that people really do love the atmosphere created by great food!”

To find out more about Deli of the Year visit www.delioftheyear.co.uk where there is plenty of info about Purple Love Week too.
