We are thrilled that olive oil producer Frances Nieduszynsda is able to join us for the afternoon to tell us how she produces and harvests her own olive oil. She has been cultivating olives at Castagneto Carducci in Tuscany, Italy since 1987 and visitors will be invited to sample this years oil at Busy Lizzie’s Craft & Plant Shop near Newton Poppleford.

The shop also has a fine range of other olives and olive edibles which will be available to taste. The Craft Shop will be exhibiting the latest range of olive related gifts on offer which are made by a variety of local artists and craftspeople, dozens of who are now making an array of interesting and unusual items for the shop. “We work hard to support the talented artists we have locally,” says Liz Motler of Busy Lizzie’s. “The shop has become an important place to show off their work as well as encourage them to produce items which are otherwise difficult to find.”

In additon, April is an excellent time to be talking about growing olive trees here in Devon and that is exactly what we shall be doing on Wednesday, 27th April with Caradoc Doy. Caradoc, who has been growing olives in Devon for over 15 years, will be on site to advise. He will be available to talk to about pruning, feeding and how to get the best from growing olives in the garden or in containers.

Caradoc also grows an olive variety which has been growing outside in the UK for over 30 years and he has had it officially named the Peace Olive, Olea europaea ‘Peace’. “Many people are surprised to hear how hardy these trees really are and it should be emphasised that olives also grow in cold parts of Europe and even Western China. The oldest olive tree in the UK is now about 100 years old and fruits well in good summers,” says Caradoc.
